Curriculum Intent Statement

Together We Learn, Together We Succeed

At Orchard View Primary Academy, we provide a broad, engaging, and aspirational curriculum that is shaped by a deep understanding of our pupils and their needs. No matter their starting point, our pupils will acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the wider world. Our curriculum is guided by our motto ‘Together We Learn, Together We Succeed’ and our values of PRIDE (Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Excellence) reinforce this. We will ensure that every pupil has access to opportunities that meet their needs and challenge each pupil to reach their full potential, all while fostering a love of lifelong learning, in a safe and stimulating environment.

Partnership promotes teamwork and collaboration, supporting each other towards success. Respect ensures our pupils value education and learning and are well prepared for the next stage of their learning journey, within the community in which they live. Integrity and Determination ensure pupils develop learning behaviours such as high expectations, openness, thinking independently, adopting a growth mindset and developing self-regulation. Excellence ensures that pupils aim high, work hard and believe in themselves, striving to be the best they can be. This enables our pupils to achieve their potential and maximise opportunities to take greater responsibility for their own learning.

Core British Values, along with spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, are woven throughout our curriculum. This ensures that pupils understand their rights and responsibilities, the importance of law and democracy, and the values that will help them succeed and thrive as well-rounded citizens in a rapidly changing world.

How our values drive our curriculum at OVPA

At Orchard View, our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum while using the flexibility of academy status to tailor learning to the specific needs of our pupils. By placing children at the heart of our curriculum decisions, we create vibrant subjects and a rich learning environment that stimulates pupils thinking and senses. We also build meaningful connections with our local environment and history to foster appreciation and respect for the local community. Outdoor learning and Forest School play a significant role in our curriculum, ensuring that all pupils experience activities that enhance cultural capital, enrich learning, and develop their character and well-being. Themed events, guest speakers, and educational trips engage and inspire pupils, providing the opportunity to explore subjects in greater depth to promote deeper understanding.

Our curriculum will emphasise fundamental skills in maths, reading, writing, and spoken language, with all subjects applied in various contexts. Across all subjects, the progressive acquisition of skills and knowledge ensures retention, reinforcement, and development, enabling pupils to know more, remember more, and achieve more. Our curriculum is carefully crafted, allowing our pupils to make connections and embed both skills and knowledge. Subject content is purposefully selected and explored in greater depth.

The key principles of our curriculum design aim to empower OVPA pupils to:

  • Master the essential skills needed to succeed in today’s society

  • Appreciate the importance of learning

  • Become confident, independent individuals with a passion for learning

  • Show resilience when faced with challenges

  • Respect the diverse community and world they inhabit

  • Gain a broad cultural understanding of both our country and the wider world

  • Achieve academic success across all subjects, meeting or exceeding national expectations by the end of their primary education

  • Be ready for the challenges and opportunities of the next phase of their education

  • Set aspirations for the future, knowing that hard work and determination will help them achieve their goals
